Understanding maximum wattage in lamps:

For years, people have chosen light bulbs by the watt, learning over time about how bright a typical 40-watt or 60-watt bulb is. But wattage tells you only how much energy a bulb uses — not how bright it is.

With newer light bulbs designed to use less energy, wattage is no longer a reliable way to gauge a light bulb's brightness. That takes lumens.

The following chart is useful in selecting an LED alternative to an incandescent bulb.  Lumens are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a lamp or light source - or put simply, the light output.

If you're used to choosing a bulb for your lighting based on wattage, simply find the wattage you would use, and then note the corresponding value in lumens.  You will find this number on almost all LED lighting packaging. LED bulbs use a significantly lower amount of energy than incandescent bulbs, making it possible to use virtually all of these choices in most lighting fixtures.  You should of course check the information on your bulb's packaging to ensure it is compatible with your specific fixture.

One other thing to consider when purchasing an LED bulb is whether the bulb is dimmable.  Not all LED bulbs are - and this feature can be useful if you plan on adjusting the output of light on your lamp.

There are other factors worth considering when purchasing a bulb, including color temperature - and the following article can be helpful in helping you pick the perfect bulb for your specific lighting application:
