- A native to North America, the Fragrant Water Lily has both medicinal and edible parts. The seeds, leaves, flowers, and rhizomes can all be eaten. The rhizomes were used by first nations to treat coughs and colds. The stem was also used to treat toothaches by placing them directly on the tooth.
- The scientific name, Nymphaea odorata, comes in part from the ancient Greek word ‘nymph’ and means a feminine spirit that inhabited water bodies like wells, waterways, and springs.
