Product Features
- Exclusively available only from Mellow Monkey
- Handcrafted by local artisan, Alan Winick, this tide clock has the image of Long Beach Bar "Bug" Lighthouse, which helps mariners navigate the hazardous sandbar between Orient Harbor and Gardiner’s Bay, near Long Island, NY, with a tide that rises and falls as the actual tide in your location goes from high to low.
-
Originally built in 1870, the screw piles, which left an opening beneath the structure, inspired its nickname "Bug" Light, because when the rocks were covered at high tide, the lighthouse looked like a giant water bug.
-
The structure was destroyed by a fire in 1963 and after a quarter century without this North Fork icon, East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation was established to reconstruct Long Beach Bar "Bug" Light.
-
Hundreds of local residents contributed not only financial support but also materials, equipment and labor to rebuild the lighthouse from 1989-1990. Innovative planning and construction, along with this outpouring of generosity produced remarkable results. The project took only 60 days from inception to completion, making it one of the most unique lighthouse restoration projects in the world.
